2024 Alaska Road Trip (Day 33)

This journal posting chronicles Day 33 of a road trip to Alaska and back with Diane, Kenny and Deneen.

Day 33 - Thursday July 25th

Today was our second full day staying at Williwaw Campground, near Whittier, AK.

We started by getting up late and eventually heading over to John and Pat’s rental house for breakfast.

After an excellent breakfast and some relaxation we headed off to visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, not too far from our campground.

One of the signs at the center had some helpful life lessons…

The center is basically a large set of fenced fields with various wildlife in, generally large, fenced areas.

One of the first ones we came across was this resting moose.

Then there was an area of Muskox, which was cool since most people probably have not seen them before. The last time I was in Alaska I did see some in the wild, but that was way up by Prudhoe Bay, which we did not go to on this trip.

They had several bears, which looked a little bored to me. We have seen both black and grizzly bears in the wild on this trip.

Look at those claws…

We have not seen any elk in the wild on this trip and I recall seeing only one sign warning of them along the road.

We have seen lots of Bison in the wild on this trip.

We also have not identified any wolves in the wild on this trip. Although I am pretty sure I saw one on my last trip to Alaska.

After touring the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center for a few hours, we headed back to John and Pat’s rental house and relaxed before dinner.

For dinner, John had come up with the Double Musky Inn as “the” place to go. While they do not take reservations, we only had a short wait in their bar (along with some cocktails) before they had a dining table available for the six of us.

All of us, except Diane, had some form of their New York steak, Diane had their Creole Style Halibut.

Noteworthy, is the look on Kenny’s face when they put his steak in front of him, see the second photo in the gallery below. All of the portions were very large, and delicious.

We took home a lot of leftover steak, although Kenny came very close to finishing his before I finally told him to save the rest.
